Life is Art
To be horribly honest I chose this piece of artwork because watermelon is one of my favorite fruits. It's cheap, delicous, sweet, and healthy. I don't know anyone that doesn't enjoy a nice big slice of ripe watermelon. Also, a giant watermelon in the fridge is perfect for hiding a couple cans of mountain dew behind, which keeps from reminding my lovely wife to tell me I need to drink less soda pop. Haha.
In her painting Frida Kahlo captures a sense of ripeness and freshness of her subject with the vivid coloring used. The giant watermelon in the middle first captures your attention with its dull and mysterious shade of green; yet the cutaways surrounding it suggest the tasty, sweet treasure on the inside. With the blue skies above, I imagine the subject is out on a picnic enjoying nature or perhaps in a busy marketplace being pawned off on a lucky customer.
Perhaps Ms. Kahlo, through her medium seen here, is trying to imply that things, perhaps even people, are not always what or who they first seem to be and that greater things are to come. It reminds me that we shouldn't judge situations until we've examined them from every angle. If you didn't know what watermelon was, just by looking at it you probably wouldn't consider eating it. Since there is plenty of fruit to go around, maybe she's telling us to enjoy our friends, family, and closest company in all that mother nature has to offer.

I like your interpretation of Kahlo's watermelon portrait. Good choice of descriptive words. Good blog.
